91 Loop’s location caught my eye, it’s trendy atmosphere reeled me in, and it’s unique and affordable ‘pod experience’ sold me. It’s located in the middle of central Cape Town on Loop Street (I’ll let you guess which number 😉 ).

91 Loop is the perfect starting and ending point for all imaginable Cape Town adventures, with it’s free brekkie in the morning and comfy place to lay your head at night. You can take part in organized activities by 91 Loop’s amazing activities manager, or you can simply use it as a home base to walk around town, go to the markets, explore trendy eateries and cafe’s (although 91 Loop is one itself!), or venture out to dozens more adventures in the area.
91 Loop has a perfect social atmosphere, with a massive common area and outdoor area where other backpackers are constantly hanging out. The common area actually doubles as a super cool restaurant/bar called the Honey Badger, which holds events of its own and even draws a local crowd. 91 Loop is central to the art scene of Cape Town also, and you will always find an exhibit going on here during First Thursday’s, Cape Town’s monthly art night in the center of town. You can honestly walk to nearly all the cool bars from the hostel, or take an uber that won’t cost you more than $2. Something I have learned as I travel is that it is always worth it to stay in town and be that much closer to the action.
As for the pod experience? I only knew things like this existed in Japan, but 91 Loop has brought it to the southern hemisphere in a big way. All their rooms are named after big worldly cities, and the pods are located in ‘Rio de Janiero.” Inside here you can find rows of double-decked ‘pods.’ Each pod is built long-ways into the wall, with a slightly-larger-than-twin mattress, a side shelf to put all your stuff, a keycard-activated locker so you can keep your valuables safe, and a little curtain that you can close for privacy.
It’s like a dorm, but private. Kindof. You wouldn’t sit on a dorm bed and change, or pick your nose, or lay naked (I dunno, things you wouldn’t do in public 😛 ). But, because you are conveniently enclosed in your own little hole in the wall closed by a curtain, it’s darker, easier to sleep, and you can do whatever you want without worrying if you’ll be seen. Like, change clothes without having to go to the bathroom. I’m not sure what you were thinking! 😛
They also have heaps of other types of rooms, like privates and normal dorms, but I wanted to highlight the pod experience because it’s super unique and affordable (and that’s where I stayed!).
Dependant upon season, these pods go for R220 -250ish a night; basically just less than $20USD. So if you want something affordable and central in Cape Town… you should absolutely consider 91 Loop!
