Whenever you visit a new foreign country, one of the best ways to truly get to know the place is to connect with the locals that live there.
I have always felt that just expecting English to get you everywhere you need in this world, as many travelers do, is a bit selfish sometimes. As someone who seeks to understand and learn about new cultures, I feel it necessary to also learn some of the language of the countries that I visit.
That’s why one of my passions as a traveler (and all around learner) is learning new languages. I always try to learn at least a few words of each country I go to, and try to learn as much as I possibly can. And languages that are very prevalent all over the world are even more valuable to not only learn, but hold on to and actually remember!
But as someone who’s constantly moving, traveling, busy with my blog, or working, it’s really hard to find the time to dedicate to language learning. I find that a lot of times it seems pretty fruitless as well, using apps that teach meaningless phrases or online modules that lack real substance. It’s tough and requires a lot of real dedication!
Even with apps that send daily reminders, I find that I lack motivation to actually flick through the flashcard-like vocab, and find it hard to grasp or actually remember those words more than a day later. I have tried up to five or six different apps, all of which haven’t gotten me much farther than being able to ask for the bill or say ‘please’ and ‘thank you.’
This brings me to my next point: pretty much anyone you ask about language learning will say that you have to converse with a native speaker to really get anywhere. And no, the robot-like voices in language learning apps do not count! You need to be, in a way, forced to speak and listen only in the language you’re trying to learn.
This is why I’m excited to share with you lovely people a new website I discovered called Rype. Rype is revolutionizing language learning by pairing its users up with a real, live human who speaks your target language, who you can have daily sessions with once you’ve paid a flat fee. It’s 1 on 1 and live – you aren’t sharing the space with dozens of other students and getting lost in the crowd.
It’s literally like a gym membership, but for language learning. Like going to the gym, you can use Rype at your leisure – only when you are free, any day of the week. They hand-pick only the best teachers, who you can have access to at any time as well.
How cool is that? You no longer have to travel to find native speakers to converse with, or enroll in a class to get a fantastic teacher. You can have both at your fingertips as long as you are connected to the internet 😉 Technology these days, am I right?!
Think of it as having a personal trainer, but for learning a language. You best believe I will be studying up on how to speak Spanish with Rype before my South America trip next year!
So here’s a quick overview that can help explain exactly how it works, with some infographics shared with me by Rype:
How Rype Works

They also have an amazing onboarding process where someone personally reaches out to you for a 1-on-1 consultation call to learn more about your goals, needs, and proficiency. And they make it as easy as possible to get 1-on-1 help from their team.
Where Rype teachers are from
After digging through the website a little bit, I found a useful graphic that shares where the professional teachers at Rype are from.
Whether you’re looking to learn Spanish from Colombia, Argentina, Spain, or French from Paris, Quebec, etc., they’ve got available teachers ready to teach you.
How Rype selects teachers
You also might be wondering how Rype selects their teachers.
To me, the level of quality of teachers that Rype has selected for you is one of the biggest ways that they are different. After all, who you learn from is the most important ingredient in getting faster results in the end.
Here’s a screenshot taken from their website page explaining their hiring process.
