If you’re thinking about purchasing a timeshare, chances are that you are weighing lots of pros and cons. I mean, it’s cool to own a vacation home (for a week or so each year), but are timeshares really ever worth it?
When I was growing up, I remember visiting my parents’ timeshare in Mexico each year, which I loved, but I also remember that their struggles when trying to swap for other destinations (which was guaranteed upon purchase) and eventually get rid of it were hardly worth the hassle.
The idea of partially owning a vacation property is definitely alluring. With a timeshare, you have a place to call your own without having to worry about many other issues that may arise with home ownership. You can return each year and enjoy your favorite place or places.
But – not only may that place get less enticing over the years, but there are also plenty of scams within the timeshare industry and they are not easy to get out of. Let’s take a deeper look at why I will always recommend traveling independently rather than purchasing a timeshare.
When choosing between timeshares and independent travel, the scales often tip favor the latter. While offering a sense of ownership and stability, timeshares usually fall short of delivering the true essence of adventure and freedom many travelers, myself included, crave.
The fixed schedules and predetermined destinations with timeshares can feel restrictive and limiting. As someone who blossomed as a solo adventure traveler after growing up going to resorts, I can speak from experience!
In contrast, independent travel offers a world of spontaneous possibilities, adapting to one’s desires and whims. For those seeking true adventure, there are so many exciting places to travel for thrill-seekers, from remote wilderness expeditions to adrenaline-pumping activities in exotic locales. These adventure destinations provide often inaccessible experiences through traditional timeshare arrangements, allowing travelers to push their boundaries and the borders of resorts, and create unique memories.
Independent travel means being free to explore at your own pace without being tied down to a specific location or timetable. This type of travel encourages immersion into local cultures, trying unexpected activities, and making spur-of-the-moment decisions that can lead to truly epic experiences. Unlike timeshares, often located in tourist-heavy areas, independent travel (whether solo or with your partner ot family) can take you off the beaten path, allowing for a more authentic and enriching journey.
Moreover, independent travel can often be more cost-effective. Timeshares come with hefty upfront costs and ongoing maintenance fees, leading many to wonder how to cancel a timeshare to regain financial flexibility.
Independent travelers can tailor their budgets, seeking affordable accommodations or even epic vacation rentals, local eateries, and transportation options that suit their financial needs rather than just what the timeshare property can offer. Independent travel offers the freedom to choose your own adventure, embrace local cultures, and manage budgets effectively, as you only pay when you are on the trip itself. It caters to those who crave different experiences from each trip, and value their control over their itineraries.
Flexibility and Personalization
One of the biggest benefits of independent travel is its flexibility. Travelers can plan their trips to the smallest detail or leave room for spontaneity. They can choose destinations that align with their interests and schedule activities at their own pace.
For example, they might spend a few extra days at a location they love or skip a planned stop if they find something more exciting. There’s nothing better than giving yourself a few weeks to simply enjoy your time in a destination or country and go with the flow. You can plan tours or simply do what you desire (see my other article about how to decide between booking a group tour or traveling alone).
Planning and adjusting itineraries on the go is straightforward. You can shift your plans without worries if the weather changes or a local festival pops up. This level of control allows for a deeply personalized experience that is hard to achieve with pre-packaged timeshares (or group tours).

Independent travel often leads to deeper cultural immersion. Travelers who are not bound to large resorts, big groups or strict schedules can interact more freely with locals. You can explore off-the-beaten-path locations that typical tours might miss, such as hidden cafes, family-owned shops, and local markets.
Travelers support the local economy and gain a more authentic experience by staying in locally-owned accommodations rather than international hotel chains. Eating at local restaurants, learning a few phrases in the native language, and participating in cultural events provide a richer understanding of the destination’s traditions and way of life and often a better experience as a whole.
Cost Effectiveness and Value
Independent travel can be more cost-effective than traditional vacation packages or timeshares where you pay up front. Travelers can select budget-friendly accommodations like hostels or guesthouses, or even splurge on super unique vacation rentals (I have many lists of unique stays – check out some of the most unique places to stay in the US). Planning epic trips to unique stays isn’t possible when tied to a timeshare.
With independent travel, travelers have the opportunity to customize their expenses. You can splurge on a special activity or accommodation and then save money in other areas, creating a balance where you splurge on activities or places where you see the most value, and save on others (like staying at an amazing airbnb and cooking dinner there rather than going out).
By avoiding the fixed costs of organized tours or timeshares, independent travelers often find more value for their money. Ultimately, the ability to control spending and decide based on your needs and desires is priceless.
When you really consider it, traditional timeshares present quite a few limitations that are hard to overlook. These include restrictions on time and location, financial commitments, and a lack of customization that can affect the overall vacation experience.
Restrictions on Time and Location
Timeshares usually require owners to vacation at a specific location during a set week each year. This fixed schedule can prove super inconvenient as it has absolutely no flexibility to accommodate unforeseen changes or spontaneous trips.
For those who value experiencing different destinations, this rigidity can be frustrating, and trading with other locations can be a lot more difficult than you think. The need to return to the same place annually may also become monotonous over time, reducing the excitement that comes with exploring new locales.
Financial Considerations
Owning a timeshare involves substantial financial commitments. Apart from the initial purchase cost, which can be quite high, owners must also pay annual maintenance fees and other timeshare considerations and costs that tend to add up.
These fees can increase over time and add a financial burden – and you are still responsible for them even if you can’t go! There will never be an instance where you are traveling independently and have to pay for something you do not do or use.
Additionally, should the need to sell the timeshare arise, owners may need help finding buyers, often selling at a loss. This economic aspect makes timeshares less appealing compared to more flexible travel options that allow for budgeting and adjusting expenses as needed.
Lastly, while many timeshare companies make it seem like you truly own a part of the property, you really don’t. You don’t own anything outright; rather, you are usually paying a premium just for the right to access the property annually. But, yu don’t have the same rights to rent out or monetize the timeshare as you would another property, you can’t renovate, and and the cost rarely goes up over the years was it does with other real estate.
Lack of Customization
Timeshares often come with pre-set amenities and services, leaving little room for customization. Travelers seeking unique or personalized vacation experiences may find this limiting. Since timeshares are designed to provide a consistent experience year after year, there is little opportunity to tailor accommodations or activities to individual tastes. This lack of customization can make vacations repetitive and less enjoyable for those who prefer a more bespoke travel experience.
I am by far not an expert, but to me, the idea of being tied down to one place for the same week each year is totally limiting and not what you want out of a vacation at all. Out of a vacation, you want adventure, freshness, different experiences, cultural immersion, and things like that. So are timeshares worth it? Well… not really.
I understand that many people crave the predictability of something like a timeshare or may be too busy to plan independent travel – but I encourage you to try. It’s always worth it in the end and makes much more life-changing and enriching experiences.
