Australian Nightlife: Where to Go & What to Know in Each City

After traveling all around Australia, I’ve rounded up the best Australian nightlife in each main city and town in the country, so you can make the most of nights out wherever you may travel!

To put it simply, Australians are pretty much professional partiers. The country might be known for having some of the most beautiful coastlines and national parks, but after the sun goes down, it’s the cities that take over. No matter if you like rooftop cocktails with a view of the Sydney Opera House, grungy live music in Melbourne’s laneways, lively pubs with sports games, or beach clubs on the Gold Coast, there is a nightlife here that will suit you.

I lived in a few places in Australia, have been out a lot, and have experienced the nightlife of Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, the Gold Coast, and other cities throughout the country. What I love most is that each city has its own unique “flavor.” The vibes in Sydney and Melbourne are different; you will have experiences in Sydney that you will not find in Darwin or Adelaide etc, and that’s the cool part.

This is a guide on what you should know about nightlife in each city and also includes the recommendation of the best nightclubs & dancing spots and the best bars & live music venues so that you can decide where to go—whether you’re traveling through, new to the city, or just want to have some fun.

Sydney: Harbor Lights & Big-City Energy

Sydney’s nightlife is definitely more on the glitz and glamour side. You will get a mix of all kinds of venues, from dirt-cheap dive bars to champagne rooftop lounges, but the real heartbeat of the city lies in its ability to merge different types of people, their styles, and energies into a jam-packed night.

Sydney nights can be very late; however, the city has experienced strict lockout laws, so venues don’t always stay open as late as in Melbourne or Brisbane. Also, it is a city where being appropriately dressed will take you a long way – rooftop bars and waterfront venues generally have dress codes, but places like Surry Hills and Newtown have a more relaxed vibe.

Best Nightclubs & Dancing:

• S.A.S.H.: If you’re after a big club night with famous DJs, S.A.S.H. is THE place to go in Sydney. This is the club that stays open late and books bigger names, especially in the minimal techno scene, which is big in Sydney. S.A.S.H even throws events with a similar vibe all over Australia and even internationally.
• The Ivy: Within the CBD, the Ivy is quite the scene – more of a bougie place to go to see and be seen. There is a rooftop pool bar and the main club area with more dancing, and a variety of music and events depending on the night.

Best Bars & Live Music:

• Oxford Art Factory: A place that welcomes the creation of the next generation of indie and alt-music artists.
• Enmore Theatre: A venue with a rich history that loves to host both Australian favorites and big global acts.
• Palmer & Co: Prohibition-style speakeasy
• Soda Factory: Cool little bar with fun events where you enter through a fridge door
• Beresford Upstairs: weekend beer garden is lively
• Cool Bars fr a Night Out in Newtown (from a local): Courthouse (live music), Websters (rooftop), Marlborough hotel (pub with music on different floors), Imperial (the original bar from Priscilla Queen of the Desert)

Melbourne: Laneways, Creativity & Endless Nights

If Sydney is the epitome of glamour, then Melbourne is the opposite: grungy, authentic, and full of character. Although both cities have a nightlife of their own, Melbourne’s is more eclectic, artistic, and even a bit unpredictable. You’ll find tiny laneway pubs concocting creative cocktails, underground clubs bumping the latest techno, buzzing beer gardens and riverside venues, and so much live music you’d struggle to miss it – and more places than anywhere else that stay open past sunrise.

Besides its music and nightlife, Melbourne is also known as a gaming city. It’s home to the biggest casino in the Southern Hemisphere, The Crown Casino, which has dozens of bars and nightclubs inside – effectively merging gaming culture with nightlife (and you often end up at the Crown after a night out). So basically, Melbourne is a city that can offer the best of both worlds to people who are fans of live events as well as the digital space.

Best Nightclubs & Dancing:

• Revolver Upstairs: The most renowned club of Melbourne, known lovingly as ‘Revs.’ It’s famous parties that go all weekend long, having top world-renowned dj’s, and truly one of the best club vibes on earth.
• New Guernica: Revolver’s north side cousin, Glamorama has great gigs in the subirb of Fitzroy.
• Xe54: known for dancing and occasional bigger gigs.
• The Night Cat: A Fitzroy Staple that has some live shows
• Electric: A fun spot on Chapel Street
• Brown Alley: Another multi-story CBD spot that hosts a lot of bigger dj’s and gigs.

Best Bars & Live Music:

• Black Pearl: A world-class cocktail bar in Fitzroy that manages to be both stunning and inviting. Check out my list of the best bars in Fitzroy.
• The Corner Hotel: An old and treasured establishment where you can hear anything from indie and alternative bands to big-name tours.
• Beneath Driver Lane: One of my favorite underground cocktail bars in Melbourne CBD. Some other favorites are Whitehart Bar, Fall from Grace (hidden bar), and Eau de Vie. Check out my list of the best hidden bars in Melbourne.
• Cherry Bar: This was the first bar to open on AC/DC Lane which set the tone for laneway bars. It was a staple rock & roll bar for many years. It has since moved location, but still has the classic vibe.

Brisbane: Valley Vibes & Rooftop Views

Brisbane tends to lend itself to warm and memorable nights out. With that subtropical air, rooftop bars and open-air patios are basically the city’s go-to. Most of the action lives in Fortitude Valley – a lively mix of students, backpackers, and young professionals packed into a few walkable blocks.

The energy’s high but not too chaotic like Melbourne can get. You can slide from riverside drinks to a full club night easily without changing neighborhoods. My move: start with sunset cocktails on a rooftop, then wander into the Valley’s live-music bars and clubs and let the night decide the rest.

• The Met: A multi-level club that holds the Fortitude Valley’s party scene to its maximum.
• Prohibition: A 1920s-inspired club with fancy interiors and secret rooms.

Best Bars & Live Music:

• Howard Smith Wharves: A place on the river full of bars, beer gardens, and amazing Story Bridge views. THey have tons of different events and programming all the time!
• The Triffid: A live music venue in a converted WWII hangar with pretty good gigs.
• MAYA Mexican Restaurant: Elegant cocktails with a view of the whole city.

Perth: Sunset Drinks & Northbridge Nights

Perth is a whole different mood! It’s far from the East Coast hubs, which is half the charm… it’s actually the most remote city in. the world, so you might as well enjoy it! Nights stretch long here: think sunset cocktails by the beach and a proper dance later in Northbridge.

Northbridge is the nightlife heart: walkable clubs, bars, and late-night eats. But Perth isn’t just city lights; Scarborough Beach brings the seaside party with sunset drinks and regular DJ sets that feel equal parts surf and social, and Fremantle has some epic rooftop venues and cocktail bars by the sea, too.

• Connections Nightclub: One of the most popular LGBT+ clubs of the city: vibrant, colorful, and always buzzing with events.
• El Grotto: A Scarborough Beach bar that blends the best of surf culture and electronic music.

Best Bars & Live Music:

• Mechanics Institute: Northbridge rooftop bar, perfect for sipping cocktails under the stars.
• Amplifier Bar: A rough-around-the-edges but charming hangout for rock and indie concerts… and even bowling!
• Mojo’s Bar: A unique Fremantle venue known for fostering local artists.
• Gage Roads Freo Brewery (pictured above): A super cool brewery with a great outdoor area and sunst view.
• Little Creatures Brewery: One of Australia’s most popular beers is brewed here!

Adelaide: Festivals, Fringe & Intimate Bars

If someone weren’t convinced that Adelaide was a party city from their visit during the Fringe Festival weeks, they would be hard to convince elsewhere. The town still has a lively nighttime scene driven by small laneway bars and a passionate live music-loving culture, even when it is not festival time.

The city comes alive with festivals in February and March when Fringe takes over, transforming it into a playground after dark. Peel and Leigh streets are the places to be during the week for anyone looking to have a good time in one of the many intimate cocktail bars, while the vibe on Hindley Street is dominated more by clubs.

• Zhivago: A club beneath the city with bright colored lights and nights with themes.
• Fabric Nightclub: This is a well-loved three-floor nightclub with a rooftop and tons of different themed nights from hip hop to house music to UV paint nights.

Best Bars & Live Music:

• Maybe Mae: A secret bar with a hidden entrance below Peel Street that has won several awards.
• The Gov: A venue for live music that most people in Adelaide love.

Gold Coast: Surfers Paradise After Dark

The Gold Coast is the high-rise, beachside playground of Australia, while Surfers Paradise is the most vivid place at the center of it all. Think of neon lights, beach bars, and a nightlife scene that is attracting backpackers, locals, and party-seekers from every corner of the world. Surfers is more younger kids, and

Surfers Paradise may look a little messy on weekends, but that’s the beauty of it.. you just have to lean in. If you are a fan of calm and peaceful lives, consider a visit to Burleigh or Broadbeach down the road, where there are beach bars with sunset views.

• Cocktails Nightclub: One of the top local clubs that has been around for decades. Dance floors, djs, all that good stuff.
• elsewhere bar: Nightlife mixed with art. This will have some good house & techno and even occasionally psytrance and bigger djs too.

Best Bars & Live Music:

• Burleigh Pavilion: The ocean vista complements the DJs’ music, which continues well into the night.
• Naami: A cool little hidden cocktail bar with Vietnamese vibes in Burleigh heads.

Canberra: Culture, Comedy & Craft Beers

The capital of Australia may not be highly talked about when it comes to nightlife, but that is what makes it an unknown jewel. Canberra manages to blend craft breweries, comedy shows, and live music so perfectly that it comes off as a fresh local scene made from scratch.

Braddon is where you can find the trendiest bars and the best craft beer, while Civic is home to the bigger clubs. The city is also renowned for its late-night comedy and arts events, lending its nightlife a more cultural edge.

Best Nightclubs & Dancing:

• One22: Great house and techno lineups in a super cute bar that turns into a dance club until 5am!
• 88mph: Totally different vibe but just as amazing – this place has karaoke, a light-up dance floor, pizzas, and an 80’s theme with pinball machines.

Best Bars & Live Music:

• Molly: An underground speakeasy with amazing cocktails.
• Loquita: cute and vibey tequila bar with some Mexican food and drink classics

Darwin: Tropical Nights & Open-Air Fun

Darwin’s nightlife is a combination of the tropical chill vibe and friendly people, and most of the time, the parties are held outside. It might be rooftop bars, beach clubs, or the city’s community celebrations.

The usual hub for nightlife is Mitchell Street, which is always lively with student bars, nightclubs, and pubs. Additionally, cities are also very into outdoor activities, which can range from open-air cinemas to cultural festivals.

• Monsoons: a fun pub-vibes bar with classic pub food, live music, and club nights

• Deckchair Cinema: Watch movies under the stars; it’s a truly Darwinian experience.
• The Darwin Festival offers a range of music, food, and performances every August.

Hobart – Small City, Big Spirit

While Hobart is the largest city in Tasmania, it is definitely one of the smallest in Australia! Hobart has a nightlife that is both style-driven and community-oriented at the same time. It’s not a huge nightlife city but there are definitely some really cool spots.

Salamanca Place is the center (which has an awesome market during the day), and when combined with the CBD and dock/pier area, is home to some truly worthwhile historic pubs, breweries, wine bars, and whisky culture too.

Don’t expect it to be a place of big and loud superclubs; it’s more about traditional pubs, craft cocktails, and music festivals. In June, the best nightlife of Hobart arrives: Dark Mofo (run by MONA) is an after-dark festival of art and performance that takes over the city and goes on for days. Either way, visiting MONA is a must here, too.

• The Grand Poobah: A fun and out-of-the-ordinary underground club.
• Twisted Lime: This is the live music, pool tables, and lots of regulars type spot in Hobart.

Best Bars & Live Music:

• Lark Distilling Co + The Still, LARK Whiskey Bar: Lark does distillery tours in Hobart, which are an amazing way to experience the unique whiskey scene here. They also have their own bar.
• Hobart Brewing Co: Cool brewery right on the water in the old part of town
• Bevs: A cool industrial pub with interesting cocktails and brews
• Shambles Brewery: another cool brewery with lvie music, tasting flights, and yummy food.

Nightlife in Australia is unlike anywhere else in the world, as diverse as the country itself. Sydney’s glamorous rooftop bars, Melbourne’s underground laneways, Brisbane’s riverside clubs, and Byron Bay’s bohemian beats all offer you a different way to have fun when it gets dark.
