If you have ever watched the sun going down behind palm fronds and wondered what you are going to do next, then this guide is the answer to your question. I have tested lines, stairways, secret doors, “are we sure this is the entrance?” hallways, and more than a few cocktail lists for years here to curate these 12 nightlife moments in LA.

12) Rooftop Cinema Club DTLA: Watching Movies on a Rooftop Over the Downtown
The city looks very different from a rooftop… especially while you are watching a movie over it. Rooftop Cinema Club DTLA offers comfy loungers, personal headphones, and a lineup that ranges from cult classics to new(ish) favorites, along with sunset views that feel like a mood board.
It’s a good for a warm-up for a big night, but perhaps better for a cozy evening in LA where you want to experien e the city at night but not have a huge party. This option is fabulous on a warm summer evening, but honestly equally good on a cool winter evening where you can bundle up in blankets and drink warm drinks.

11) No Vacancy, Hollywood: A Speakeasy in a Historic House with Performances
For an LA nightlife experience that involves history and culture, check out No Vacancy. Among the hidden passages, vintage mansion vibe, and a crowd that is fun rather than fussy, you will find yourself immersed in a different world.
Along with the intermittent performances at the theater, you can also expect to have some serious crafted cocktails, live and DJ music performances, and that feeling of being in on something exclusive. The answer is yes, there is bowling; two vintage lanes inside an old-Hollywood lounge with highly sippable classics and board games at the ready. Make a reservation if you are determined to go bowling; otherwise just drift in for drinks and people-watching in a room with the kind of wood paneling that looks fantastic in photographs.

7) Brass Monkey or Pharaoh: K-Town Karaoke, Two Ways
Now, for a bit of a different kind of LA night everyone must have – that’s just as (if not more) fun. Koreatown is the area that basically came up with the concept of the “just one more song” night. Karaoke here can get wild and is always so much fun.
- Brass Monkey is the energetic typical: a communal stage, a dive-bar heart, and a crowd that cheers like you’re at the Greek. Arrive early to get your song in rotation; it is hard to get a spot later.
- Pharaoh Karaoke is the dream of private rooms: 40+ rooms, very late hours, and ‘we’re a band now’ vibe with your friends. Bring snacks, take the aux, and lose track of time
Go For: Singing loudly, especially ballads as if it was the year 2007 and no one has to go to work tomorrow.
6) Sound Nightclub, Hollywood: Dance Like It’s Your Cardio
Sound nightclub has been an LA staple for years – I used to go here in college fot some of the best DJ shows! Think: short ceilings, a serious sound system, and talented DJs that actually adjust their music according to the reaction of the crowd.
Here, the sound is close but not too intimate for a proper club, which keeps the energy at the club quite high and the nights unforgettable. So, the weekly lineup is here to be checked, house, techno, and melodic sets are rotating, and they have big names coming through all year. A pro tip would be that tickets sell out pretty quickly especially for big artists, so you should book them in advance.
Go For: A proper dance floor with audiophile bones.
5) Academy LA & Exchange LA: The Classic “We’re Out-Out” Club Night in LA
Ready for a truly LA night out? These two places are where you go for big-room energy, headliners, and a proper clubby experience.
- Academy LA (Hollywood): This spot has apen-air courtyard vibes when the weather is good; a lineup of EDM that can always be trusted, and good production as well. There can be quite a long line, so it is better to come before midnight.
- Exchange LA (DTLA): The old stock exchange building that was transformed into a rave club with four floors. So, you can expect very famous artists and a crowd from downtown that really knows what they are doing.
Go For: Peak-night lasers, confetti, and a step-count that shocks you.
4) The Comedy Store, Laugh Factory, & Largo: Comedy as a Night Out
You can’t talk about LA nightlife experiences without mentioning comedy. There are so many amazing comedy spots here, and of course, LA is the place that a lot of both famous and rising stars in comedy call home. Leave with a pain in the cheeks from laughing too much!
- The Comedy Store (WeHo) still arranges lineups with surprise drop-ins, so buy a ticket for the show if you want to see it, but stay for the hallway sightings. It’s a mess of fun in the best way.
- Laugh Factory is one of the most well-known comedy spots in LA right on Sunset Blvd that brings in tons of big and more famous names in comedy and gives others their big break. It’s been the launchpad and hangout for huge comics since the late 60’s.
- Largo at the Coronet is the intimate alternative: curated lineups, comedians’ comedians, and the odd musical guest popping in like it’s no big deal. Tickets sell out fast.
Go For: A different kind of “big night” that you’ll remember and quote for weeks.
3) Break Room 86, K-Town: An 80s Time Capsule With Secret Doors
Picture this: a hidden entrance (in a vending machine), live dancers, arcade machines, karaoke suites, and an 80’s theme – yes, a themed bar! It’s a total throwback party that manages to avoid the trap of a costume party and still be cool. If you are a fan of themes, this is the place where you can not only dress up, but also sing and play. It is better to make a reservation on weekends; the surprise-show nights are definitely worth checking their socials for.
Go For: Retro fun that still feels fresh (and very Instagram-ready).
2) The Troubadour: Live Music You Are Going To Brag About Later
What makes the Troubadour special isn’t just the history – it’s the room. Low stage, tight floor, wraparound balcony, bartenders who can still hear you because the sound mix is clean. You can stand almost anywhere and actually see fingers on frets, not just screens.
Big artists drop in for warm-ups between arena dates, album-anniversary sets, and more. This is also where Elton John got his big break. It feels like a rehearsal you got invited to!

1) DTLA to WeHo – The “Two-Stop” Perfect Night
I can always repeat the same two-part thing forever, and it will still be my favorite: first sunset drinks with a view, and then a dance-floor-finale. So do the golden hour at Harriet’s Rooftop (or any sky-high patio like Perch Downtown or Kassi in Venice) and then take a rideshare to the Sound for the headliner. It’s a one-two punch of pretty and sweaty, the exact LA mix that keeps me smitten with this city.
Go For: An optimal best-of-both-worlds plan with no dead time.

- The Comedy Store patio → late tacos → home: A super simple plan of low energy that works all the time.
- Rooftop Cinema Club date night → moody martinis nearby: Strong first-date vibe without the awkwardness.
- K-Town crawl: Begin at Pharaoh in a private room and when you feel like Brass Monkey for that big-room singalong, switch there. Drink water 😛
Tips and Things to Know to Really Have a Great Night in LA
1) Book ahead. The good stuff: Tickets for Sound/Academy/Exchange/Troubadour, Spare Room bowling tables, and Rooftop Cinema seats are all limited. So, purchasing in advance and thus avoiding the waiting line stress is the best option.
2) Stack the evening. The geography of LA is such that you can easily plan clusters of places, but don’t want to go back and forth between neighborhoods during the night unless you want to sit in traffic forever. For example, it makes sense to go from WeHo sunset to a Hollywood club, from K-Town dinner to karaoke, or a DTLA film to an Arts District bar. Group together venues in one or two areas for a night – trust me.

3) Ride-share between neighborhoods. Los Angeles’s villain is parking. If you are the kind of people who need to save their patience for the door staff and their feet for the dance floor, then it is better not to bother with having to try to park. LA
4) Know the new rules. Santa Monica introduced a 2025 “open container” entertainment zone pilot (limited to specific times/blocks and wristband-only). It is not allowed, however, to roam the whole of LA with a margarita, so go through the details of the rules carefully.
5) Dress the vibe. Some places like No Vacancy have dress codes enforced. When you can’t decide: clean sneakers or boots, smart-casual layers, and something that you can dance in.
6) Eat. K-Town will never say no to you after midnight. You can even order food from the karaoke bars that you frequent, so fries and wings are the perfect meals when you “accidentally” sang five songs.” When in doubt, the street hot dogs in the early hours absolutey hit the spot.
7) Mind the closures. LA’s scene is changing. Even well-loved and iconic places often change hands or close to reopen as something else, so make sure to check the hours of a place before you Uber.
