Things to Do in San Francisco for Couples

Before I get going on some awesome recommendations of romantic things to do in SF, here are some tips for the city if you are visiting. If you are local, keep scrolling!

San Francisco Basics: San Francisco is one of the most exciting and diverse cities in the world, set in a tiny 7×7 mile square. Within these boundaries, you can find MANY different neighborhoods famous for different reasons – from touristy to affluent, a bit sketchy to outdoorsy, artsy, grungy, and more… but all of them are HILLY! Here are some San Francisco fun facts to get you started.

Getting around: San Francisco has lots of bike paths as well as MUNI underground metro trains and BART trains that connect with other parts of the bay area. If you have time, you can walk anywhere, and if you don’t, grab an Uber/Lyft or drive!

San Francisco Weather: As Mark Twain once said, “the coldest winter I ever had was a summer in San Francisco.” It’s cold here. There’s ALWAYS fog here (so often the fog has a name, Karl, and Instagram account. Pack for cold weather and hope for warm!

AmazingCo Mystery Picnic Scavenger Hunt

This is one of the most fun things I have done in SF. AmazingCo is a company that sets up food scavenger hunts in different cities and has them end in a beautiful park for a picnic. The San Francisco Mystery Picnic takes you through Haight + Ashbury and ends… well… I want to keep it a surprise! They also have Half Moon Bay, Sausalito, and Napa options.

You can do this with 2 or 4 people, so it’s a perfect daytime San Francisco date idea for solving puzzles in the city, visiting local eateries for delicious food, taking photos, and learning about iconic places as you pass by. Read my SF Mystery Picnic review here or book below!

Nothing says ‘I love you’ like a romantic boat cruise – especially one where you can look up at the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the city skyline. Seriously, SF is a VERY underrated place to sail – the views are unmatched!

Sunset Premier Dinner + Dance Cruise: More Romantic Boat Option

For something a bit more romantic, head out on a 3-hour sunset dinner cruise on the bay and watch the city skyline and Golden Gate change from sunset colors to lit up at night. This cruise includes a fresh dinner, music, and nonalcoholic beverages so bring a flask bring some money to buy drinks onboard.

Imagine getting a bird’s eye view of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco city, and the whole bay while clutching your love’s hand, knowing you created a core memory together. This is not the cheapest San Francisco couples activity, but it’s sure to leave a lasting mark. And it’s honestly not THAT much pricier than the dinner cruise!

Scooter around San Francisco things to do for couples
Scooter around San Francisco

These days it’s very easy to rent a scooter for the day and explore the city, with your love’s arms around you (or vice versa)! you can do daily scooter rentals, but Revel is a company with electric scooters all over the city kindof like Lime or Bird that you can just pick up, ride, and drop off… but these fit two people!

This is truly an epic way to explore the city on your own terms where you can skip most traffic, park pretty much anywhere, and leave the scooter wherever when you are done with it. Oh, and all you need is a driver’s license (they don’t go very fast). Time to explore!

Take a Wild Foraging Class

Yep, you heard that correctly… you can do guided foraging right within the city! If you and your boyfriend or girlfriend love being sustainable and learning new things, head to Forage SF to book a session foraging wild mushroom, seaweed, or learning about other edible plants you can pick up while exploring the city.

Go to a Nice Dinner at Romantic San Francisco Restaurants

This is an obvious choice for date night ideas in San Francisco but it had to be said. Here are some of the best ideas for where to eat for a date in SF:

Set Menu at Restaurant Gary Danko

One of San Francisco’s Michelin star fine dining restaurants, Restaurant Gary Danko provides multiple-course set menus with high-end American/French cuisine. It’s right in the Fisherman’s Wharf so it’s well-combined with a walk down Pier 39, a bay cruise, or a seaside picnic.

BIX Restaurant

BIX is a perfect romantic restaurant because it’s set in a 1930’s speakeasy vibe with classic cocktails and live jazz music. Truly an ideal San Francisco date!

Foreign Cinema

Foreign Cinema is an artsy and magical venue for a drink or a meal in the center of the Mission District. Sit inside or in their covered, fairy lit alleyway where they sometimes screen films, and enjoy the interesting art and historical film/cinema decor throughout.

Waterbar

If you are a couple who is more into dining with a view, Waterbar is the restaurant for you. This spot is RIGHT on the water (with Bay Bridge views) and boasts a sustainable seafood menu as well as a fantastic happy hour.

Go on a Wine Tasting Day Tour

You too can be as happy as this couple 😛

One of the world’s best wine regions is only an hour from San Francisco; wouldn’t it be a shame not to check it out? The easiest way to go wine tasting (and see some other epic spots in the area) is do do a day tour from SF.

I recommend the boutique winery tour below because it visits the coolest boutique wineries, crosses the Golden Gate, and even stops in beautiful and artsy Sausalito which is quite a romantic little town on the bay. Bring some wine home to drink in your hotel afterward!

For Foodie Couples: SF Secret Food Tour of the Mission District

If you are huge foodies like my boyfriend and I, check out a food tour! Food tours are the best way to tap into the diversity in cuisines in any city, especially cultural melting pots like San Francisco and even Melbourne. The tour below takes you through the history of different immigrant communities in the Mission, tasting your way through each!

Check Out a Cool or Quirky Bar Together

Next up after a great restaurant is a great bar, of course! Luckily, San Francisco has HUNDREDS of epic bars of many different vibes. Here are a couple of ideas to continue the date night:

Top of the Mark

Top of the Mark is a high end cocktail bar on the top floor of a famous SF building, the Mark Hopkins InterContinental Hotel (hence the name). From the 19th floor in Nob Hill, you can see the entire city sparkling at night (or at sunset). This is sure to ‘wow’ your date.

The Interval

The Interval is one of SF’s coolest bars perfect for a date night. It’s part bar, part coffee shop, part museum, part library, and part science experiment. Perfect SF date idea for those who like quirky space or a nerdy side!

Alchemist Bar + Lounge

This is a steampunk vibe craft cocktail bar with fantastic interesting cocktails. Super fun for a first date!

Plan a Couples Spa Day

One of the best romantic things to do in San Francisco (or anywhere) is having a couples spa day where you can get a couples massage, dip in pools/spas, and have other pampering treatments together. Luckily SF is full of epic spas – I recommend the Kabuki Springs & Spa in Japantown.

Date Night at the Exploratorium

The Exploratorium is known for being a super fun, interactive science museum where you can learn and play in a hands-on way. It’s a fun San Francisco couples activity at any time, but especially after dark.

The Exploratorium runs ‘Exploratorium after dark’ adults-only sessions every Thursday, where all the sought-after exhibits are supplemented with drinks, nibbles, dj’s and more. If you are there in February you’re in even more luck; Thursday nights in February are designed specifically for lovers.

Land’s End Hike + Land’s End Labyrinth

For another day time date idea and a tiny beautiful hike, head to the tip of the San Francisco peninsula, park near the Sutro baths (another fabulous sunset spot), and take the Land’s End Trail. It takes you through some beautiful tall trees and out to a cliffy coastline where you will arrive at a beautiful rock labyrinth with a view of the Golden Gate Bridge. Bring a picnic for extra romance!

Views of the Bay Bridge at Night

Every night from sunset to midnight, the Bay Bridge between SF and Oakland lights up with fantastic patterns and colors. Just across the Golden Gate Bridge is the beautiful and rich forested area of Muir Woods (along with Marin Headlands which also has some great hikes). If you and your love like to get outdoors and go hiking, check out the Muir Woods National Monument and do some hikes in the area to truly get amongst nature.

If you aren’t sure about ubering or doing it yourself, this TOP rated tour to Muir Woods and Sausalito takes you around the woods area and around Sausalito before you jump on a ferry back. It’s only a half day, too, if you don’t have much time but want to check out the woods.

Do Some Sightseeing Together

If you are visiting San Francisco for the first time or still haven’t seen some of the main sights, it’s so much fun to be a true tourist with your loved one and explore some iconic places. Here are some ideas:

Moraga Mosaic Stairs/16th Avenue Tiled Steps

This stunning set of over 160 stairs has an incredible mosaic design on the vertical part of each stair that creates a cohesive picture when looking from the bottom. Get some exercise and an Instagram photo op while walking up these stairs!

The Painted Ladies

When you look up photos of San Francisco, many of them are of this specific line of beautiful and colorful Victorian homes stacking their way u a hill overlooking the bay. These are great to lay eyes on, but for a more romantic afternoon idea, bring a picnic and chill out in adjacent Alamo Square for views of the Painted Ladies.

Walk or Bike the Golden Gate Bridge

Crossing the Golden Gate is pretty much a MUST in SF, and your options are to walk it or to bike it! These are the most pinch-me views in the whole city that are magical to experience with your partner. You can walk the brighe starting from the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center; here’s all you need to know about walking the Golden Gate.

If you want to bike the bridge, you can do so on weekends or after 3:30pm. You can rent a bike to do it yourself, or book a guided tour that spends some time exploring cute Sausalito (and has e-bikes available for the adventurous but not as athletic among us. No judgment).

Super Unique Things to Do in San Francisco for Couples: Audium Theatre of Sound

Humbly occupying a corner of Nob Hill for almost 50 years, the Audium “Theatre of Sound” is a VERY unique place to visit in San Francisco (and the world). Here, you experience a ‘sound show’ in a dark room with different melodies bouncing around the circular room from over 170 different speakers located in the ceiling, walls, floor, and everywhere in between.

It plays with your senses in a totally different way, and is fantastic to experience what has been called like a “movie for your ears.”

Tour the 17 Mile Drive and Beautiful Carmel Coastlines from SF

For a romantic sightseeing day from San Francisco, you can’t get much more beautiful than the famous 17 Mile Drive of Carmel. This route along cliffy and rough coastlines presents some of the best views in northern California, including the iconic “Lone Cyprus.”

Explore and taste clam chowder in Monterey, and walk the cute streets of Carmel-by-the-Sea in this day tour. It’s the best way to explore some incredible scenery in the area in just one day.

Take the Skunk Train for True California Views

Now this isn’t exactly one of the ‘things to do in San Francisco for couples” as it’s quite far north, but it’s so much fun I had to include it in this list. Take a ride on the Skunk Train from Fort Bragg (the very beginning of Pacific Coast Highway) and the tiny town is Willits, through the California Redwoods, on an 1800’s steam train.

Book a Weekend Away in Napa Valley

What could possibly be more romantic than a weekend in Napa Valley at a beautiful hotel with a spa, Michelin-star restaurant, and wine tasting on-site? Behold one of the best romantic getaways from San Francisco: non other than California’s famous wine country. Check out some of the most unique places to stay in Napa Valley (which are equally romantic) in my other article here.

Angel Island State Park

Many people don’t know about one of San Francisco’s best hidden gems, which is Angel Island State Park. This state park is an island off the coast of the city that you can reach by ferry. The ferry ride is spectacular by itself, an there are lots of hiking/biking trails and even a tram to take you around for a perfect daytime date.

Baker Beach: Walk, Picnic, or Beach Day Under the Golden Gate

Baker Beach views under the Golden Gate Bridge

Want a fit of retro fun for one of the most epic date night ideas in San Francisco? Head to the Church of 8 Wheels, SF’s own roller disco! Go full 80’s style with music, lights, and rollerskating (and you can even dress up with your partner for some extra fun).

Stop for Delicious Baked Goods

For a more relaxed idea for things to do in San Francisco for couples, stop to grab some of SF’s BEST baked goods all over the city… and SF has loads! Here are my top picks:
