Any time of year is a dream in Barcelona, a city full of sunshine, beaches, history, cute laneways, tons of things to do, and MANY Barcelona outdoor activities. With great weather (especially in the summer) and more hours of sunshine per year than most of Europe, this is a great city to enjoy time in the great outdoors.
Barcelona is lucky to be nestled in a nook between beautiful, sprawling beaches, adventurous, forested mountains with trails and historic sites, and a park-filled city. This leads to outdoor activities in every corner of Barcelona, from the beaches to the hills (which have great views, too).
Here are some of the most unmissable outdoor activities in Barcelona, how to get there, how much they cost (if anything), and links to the best tours when appropriate – tried and tested or top-rated. After living here for a few summers, you can trust my judgment!

Outdoor Activities IN Barcelona – In the City
Here are the best outdoor activities in Barcelona that take place within the city borders – in Barcelona’s city center itself and outskirts that are generally reachable by the metro or other public transport.
Don’t forget to check out my article on the best panoramic views in Barcelona if you’re a view-lover like me, and unique places to stay in Barcelona if you love an interesting hotel or rental.
Hike Up to Tibidabo

That’s right, there are actually TONS of hikes in Barcelona… and this one might be the most exciting. Tibidabo and the Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (the HUGE castle-looking church you can see on the hill from EVERYWHERE in the city) present probably the best views in Barcelona.
There’s a funicular you can take up to this viewpoint for €13.50… but what’s the fun in that?! Spend a couple of hours hiking up Barcelona’s most central mountain, and the views will be that much more rewarding. You can also enter the small theme park at the top and ride a Ferris wheel looking over the whole city.
Rent a SUP and explore Barceloneta

You can rent SUP “Stand Up Paddle” boards from all over the beach in Barcelona, especially during the summer. Head to Barceloneta or any of the nearby beaches and rent a SUP right from the sand.
The waves are generally not too big here, so the water is calm enough to stand up and paddle comfortably. On a calm summer day, you can see dozens of people enjoying one of the best Barcelona outdoor activities… SUP along the beach! If you’d prefer to book in advance, you can reserve a SUP online and meet them at the beach.
Pro tip: if you can swing it, try to book your SUP session for golden hour. The sunset views from the water are UNREAL, and you’ll get some of the best photos of your trip with the sky all pink and orange behind the Barcelona skyline. Just be prepared – everyone else has the same idea, so the beach can get pretty busy in summer!
Do a Barcelona Bike Tour
One of the BEST Barcelona outdoor activities that allows you to see the most of the city in a half-day is a Barcelona bike tour. These bike tours take you all over the best parts of the city while also teaching you some history and giving you a wonderful few hours outside with the breeze through your hair. I recommend this tour the most if you don’t have too long, but still want to do something fun outside while learning about the city.
Or Take the Bike Tour Up A Notch with an E-Bike PHOTOGRAPHY Tour

More into photography and less into pedaling your bike? Try this awesome, well-rated photography e-bike tour. You will get to see even MORE of Barcelona’s main sights during this outdoor adventure with a professional photography guide who can help you capture some of the best photos of your trip. Everyone wants awesome travel photos, right?! This tour is the perfect way to do it!
If biking isn’t your thing but you still want a fun outdoor tour, e-scooter tours have become super popular in Barcelona. They’re basically like the bike tours, but you’re on an electric scooter instead (which means less effort) and you can cover even more ground. I’ve seen these tours zipping around all over the city, and they always look like they’re having a blast!
Go on Outdoor Walks + Hikes in the City
There are quite a few beautiful places to walk and hike in the city. Here are the best:
Walk (or Boat) through Parc de la Ciutadella
This massive park is right in the Barcelona City Center, but it will make you feel miles from the concrete jungle with its beautiful gardens and vast expanses of green grass. You can also visit some historic buildings, monuments, the Barcelona Zoo, and even a lake for boating, which is a perfect relaxing Barcelona outdoor activity!
This entire Park is a mecca for fun and mostly free things to do outside in BCN – even if you want to set up a picnic blanket and eat/read in the shade. There is an increasing number of yoga and fitness classes taking place outdoors in the park, too.
Explore Montjuic Hill – Gardens + Castle

Montjuic Hill has got to be my FAVORITE place in Barcelona. This massive rocky hill towering above the city is home to TONS of gardens, multiple castles/forts, walking trails galore, parks, the Barcelona Olympic precinct, old stadiums, viewpoints, and more.
Exploring on Montjuic Hill is something you could get lost doing ALL day, and still not see it all. Make sure to check out the Mirador de Poble Sec viewpoint, Castell de Montjuic (you can take the cable car up and across to Barceloneta), and the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya/MNAC (HUGE castle museum overlooking Placa d’Espanya with sunset music on the other side – also home to one of Barcelona’s best rooftop bars).
There are a lot of tours on Montjuic; some include the old city, beach, and the Gothic quarter, and some involve riding segways around Montjuic and around the Olympic village. Check Montjuic tours here.
Marvel at the Architecture + Views in Park Güell

Parc Güell is one of the MOST important places to visit in Barcelona for anyone, especially if it’s your first time. This incredible park designed by Gaudi overlooks the city and is full of creative architecture, colorful touches, and fairytale-like spaces.
Park Güell has lots of walking trails to explore and also some famous viewpoints to sit and watch the sun go down over the city. You have to buy a ticket to go inside the main area with the amazing architecture, but there are also free areas in the park, too. To learn more about the park, grab a skip-the-line and guided tour ticket here.
Walk Around the City in General
Of course, exploring the city is naturally outdoors too, although my list focuses on more exciting and adventurous activities. But if you are looking for something more calm, exploring the city and its many parks is a great way to have fun in the sun. Check out:
- Placa de Catalunya
- Passeig del Born
- La Rambla
- Gaudi’s Casa de Mila in Eixample
- Barceloneta Beach boardwalk
- Marcat de la Boqueria
If you just want to BE outdoors without moving around too much (or ideally, drinking), here are some great places to chill on a nice day:
- My whole list of Barcelona rooftop bars – seriously, all of them!
- La Deliciosa Beach Bar
- Sal Mar Restaurant
- Red Fish
- My list of the best viewpoints in Barcelona where you can relax and enjoy
- Salts Terrassa Bar
- La Caseta del Migdia bar (great after a Montjuic hike)
- Arenas de Barcelona rooftop restaurants
Take a Sunset Cruise

Since Barcelona is right on the beautiful Mediterranean Sea, one of the BEST Barcelona outdoor activities is to go on a boat cruise. Even locals rarely get to look back at their city from the water, and it’s a special feeling. There are all kinds of Barcelona boat tours – some sunset catamaran cruises or afternoon boat tours.
This is one of the best ways to soak up the sun and see this beautiful city from a new perspective; it just looks different from out here! I recommend the catamaran cruise below with live music, which is affordable and has a fun vibe.
Try Kite Surfing
When the wind picks up a bit or in the fall, you can try kite surfing right at Barcelona’s local beaches. The waves can sometimes pick up in the wind, making the conditions perfect for kite surfing – one of the most extreme and adventurous Barcelona activities! Here are the best Barcelona kite spots and tips.
Skateboard at MACBA

One of the most hip and grunge places to hang out outdoors in Barcelona is the MACBA museum plaza, Placa dels Angels. On any given day (and any time of day or night), you will find hordes of young people here, hanging out on the steps, drinking, dancing, chatting, and skating. I used to live right around the corner from this plaza and had to walk through it all the time – I can confirm, it is *absolutely popping* at any time of day.
Many local skateboarders come here to practice their tricks on the large flat surfaces – and oftentimes get an audience, too. Grab your skateboard and head here for a true local experience, and grab some cheap beers from people selling them.
Water Sports in Barcelona
There are tons of water sports in Barcelona that you can do! Honestly, whatever water sport you can think of, there’s probably an operator offering it in Barcelona. Usually, you can find shops + stands along the beach selling water sports activities, but you can also book them in advance online if you want to make sure the companies are well-reviewed and reputable. Links below!
Parasailing, Fly Boarding, and Jet Skiing in Barcelona

When the sea is calm, and the weather is good, it’s the PERFECT time for some water sports in Barcelona! The beaches here offer lots of options. Parasailing in Barcelona can offer one of the MOST incredible views over the city and the beach – think, views from a boat but elevated. You really can’t beat it.
You can also try your hand at flyboarding (standing on a water-propelled platform), jet skiing for an affordable price, banana boating, jet boating, hoverboarding, and more! Check out Jetscoot for a selection of watersports or book parasailing online here.
Go Scuba Diving
Most people don’t know that you can scuba dive right from the beach in Barcelona! Just a few beaches down from Barceloneta, near El Poblenou, is where local dive shops operate. The underwater life isn’t the MOST incredible here to be honest, but it’s a great place with calm waters to take some scuba diving lessons or do some fun dives or a discover dive on a beautiful sunny day.
For scuba diving in Barcelona and also in Costa Brava, check out Medusadive – they’re the best in the area and also who my friend did his scuba divemaster and instructor course with.
Outdoor Activities NEAR Barcelona – Short Road Trips + Drives Away
Some of the most adventurous and epic Barcelona outdoor activities are actually located within a few hours of the city. This part of Spain has some beautiful mountains and adventure-filled coastlines within a few short hours, so if you have time for some day trips during your time here, these are the best ones to consider to spend time outdoors.
Kayak/Snorkel in Costa Brava

Costa Brava is one of the most adventure-filled places to visit near Barcelona. This stunning coastline is home to crystal clear waters, rocky and cliffy coastlines full of caves and beautiful scenery, and tiny picturesque towns.
The best ways to enjoy Costa Brava all involve the water! Many people love to Kayak through inlets and caves here, or jump in the water to do some snorkeling. There’s a pretty epic overwater via ferrata at Cala del Moli that is one of my core memories from visiting the area (more on that below). To check out the underwater life even more, there are lots of dive shops in Costa Brava where you can dive down on shipwrecks and reefs. But you can;t beat the kayaking and snorkeling tour below.
Do the Cala del Moli Via Ferrata in Costa Brava

For something a bit more off-the-beaten-path in Costa Brava and VERY adventurous, try the only coastal via ferrata in Europe, the Cala del Moli Via Ferrata in Sant Feliu de Guixols. If you’re unfamiliar, a via ferrata is when you hike/climb a treacherous stretch of cliff/coast while attached to a harness and iron line. You must keep one hook attached to the line at all times, as it guides you around cliffs that normally would be unreachable.
The Cala del Moli via ferrata goes along some beautiful cliffs overlooking clear blue water. It involves 3-4 wire bridges where you walk over the water, some ladders up vertical cliffs, and some sketchy spots with AMAZING views. You can book a tour online, or you can rent gear from the Aventura Experience shop and do it yourself (which is what we did – no guides needed)!
Visit Montserrat and Go Hiking

Montserrat is one of the coolest places to visit around Barcelona by far, and you can see a lot of it in a simple day trip from Barcelona. Montserrat is a crazy outcropping of rocky mountains that seems to have sprung up out of absolutely nowhere, which is home to an old monastery and miles of scenic hiking trails.
The monastery is very cool to visit, but one of the BEST outdoor activities around Barcelona is to explore and hike up here. There are some funiculars to help you get around the steep parts, and a cable car to get you up to the top.
Below is the best-rated day tour to check it out. Or, you can do it yourself by getting a ticket at the Placa Catalunya, which includes metro transport, train, cable car, funicular, and lunch there and back.
Hot Air Balloon Flight over Catalonia from Barcelona

That’s right, you can take a beautiful hot air balloon flight over Catalonia only 30 minutes from Barcelona! This hot air balloon flight tour will pick you up from the city and take you to a beautiful launch point where you will be able to see views from the Mediterranean to the Pyrenees to Montserrat from a high vantage point.
See the sun rise with crisp countryside air and some of the most epic Barcelona views, and finish with a champagne breakfast! If that’s not an exciting outdoor activity, I don’t know what is!
Bungee Jumping Near Barcelona
There are actually a few places you can BUNGEE JUMP near Barcelona! How thrilling! The closest bungee jump to Barcelona is in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia , which is only about 40 minutes outside of the city (you can also take the train). There are actually a few more, too, such as in Lloret de Mar (the highest bunjee jumping crane in Spain).
The bridge here is 30m high and includes a 25m jump off a bridge over a beautiful Spanish canyon. Check out Catalonia adventures to book this awesome activity in Barcelona.
Medieval Towns of Catalunya Tour from Barcelona

If you are looking for Barcelona outdoor activities but are also interested in learning about and visiting historic places, then the Medieval Three Towns Tour might be right up your alley. This tour takes you to explore three small medieval towns around Barcelona, and gives you a guided tour around each, as well as food, time to explore, and a drive through the countryside.
These little Medieval towns are some of the most scenic and cute places to visit outside Barcelona and a great way to understand small-town life as well as life in the bigger city.

I loved hiking around Montserrat. But looks like I missed out on a lot of the other things, like Scuba diving and kayaking. I also had not heard of that very cool via ferrata. Just put that on the list.
