Heymondo Travel insurance is the best travel insurance we’ve come across – period – and our guide to Heymondo below will show you what we mean! This Heymondo review will show you just how good they are and why we have been insured by them for our travels for over three years now (in 2023). They are a newer company quickly making a name for themselves in this industry.
It’s great for all kinds of travel- from a trip a few hours away to open-ended trips, backpacking, adventure sports insurance coverage, or for those who just want reliable COVID-19 travel insurance coverage (if that’s still a thing). We have been digital nomads for a while and use Heymondo’s ‘long stay’ policies – read more below.
The Heymondo Travel Insurance policies have great details for shorter trips, but we have used them for years for our open-ended travel. We couldn’t recommend any better travel insurance company that suits our traveling needs more. Read our Heymondo review, and we will tell you more about our crazy claim stories below.

Personally, I worked in insurance for 2 years – 1 year of which I worked selling travel insurance. So this Heymondo review, you’ll find will detail how Heymondo Travel insurance is better suited to the needs of people like us in almost every way. After trying the likes of World Nomads, SfetyWing, Covermore, Allianz, and more, Heymondo has been different but better.

Heymondo Travel Insurance Review – Overview
Heymondo international travel insurance can best be summarized in four ways: innovative, easy to deal with, versatile, and good value for money.
Innovative- Heymondo Travel Insurance Does Things Differently
So they have changed the way a lot of ‘ancient’ insurance companies sell. Heymondo insurance does things differently. They are the new kids on the block, well kind of, having launched back in 2016, and they’re changing things up a bit.
Whether it is the length of stay policies (see below), the handy app (that comes with a 24hr online doctor you can chat to), or simply the level of customer service, you can tell they are adapting to how people travel today.
Heymondo Travel Insurance- They’re Easy to Deal With
Heymondo Insurance, as mentioned above, has great customer service. It’s not often you can talk to an insurance company so easily – or get a response so quickly.
Everyone has a story to tell of waiting months and months to get a response from a company, but Heymondo were on top of our claim (as you can read below in our story) and was there for us even when the underwriters weren’t so easy.
The app also makes it easy to deal with different issues if you aren’t too sure whether you should go to the doctor too. Whilst they might not be able to offer emergency assistance over the phone, having the knowledge that you can chat to a doctor about minor issues easily and 24hrs a day for free makes it so much easier.
Travel Insurance With Versatility
The versatility of Heymondo is one of the fundamental reasons we chose it. The Long Stay Cover is made for us and is unlike many other insurances we have dealt with. The three options they offer are below.
Some are self-explanatory, but this is the part where we say, “Check all of the details of your policy before purchasing.” Read on for what each policy entails.
Heymondo’s Policies Have Great Value for Money
Whilst it’s always difficult to directly compare travel insurance companies on their price, if this is your primary concern, it’s best just to get a quote and take it from there. But we feel it’s important to consider more than just price.
We have found better value for money with Heymodno insurance, especially better than World Nomads and many other companies we’ve used, too.
Different Heymondo Travel Insurance Policies
Single Trip Travel Insurance
Straight up and simple travel insurance, Heymondo Single Trip is for those looking to get away for a couple of weeks to a country and wants to deal with an easy-to-use insurance company without a huge price tag.
Annual Travel Insurance
Essentially a multi-trip policy is valid for 1 year. This one is for those that get away often but don’t exceed 120 days on any one trip.
Travel Insurance Long Stay Cover
This is the big reason why we chose Heymondo travel insurance as digital nomads. For around $300 USD, you can get 3 months of insurance or for around only $ 500 USD. You can grab yourself 8 months of worldwide insurance. They also give you the option to continually extend your insurance if you want t keep traveling, and for an affordable price (we do this and just extend based on how long we are traveling and much we can afford at the time).
Heymondo’s Long Stay Cover has been the perfect insurance for us for years now as we make our way around the world. On this policy we have processed multiple successful claims which we will outline below.
**Prices vary obviously between people and countries of origin, add ons, and destinations. This price comes up for an Australian male aged 30 with no pre-existing conditions at the time of publication.
Heymondo Travel Insurance Review- Great Value for Money!
Low Excess Travel Insurance
Most Heymondo travel insurance policies have a relatively low excess of $250 USD for medical expenses coverage only. At the time of writing, all 3 policies state excess is $250 USD.
If you are unaware of how an excess works, it means that they will deduct $250 from the total amount refunded, so if your claim is for $200, they won’t process it, but if it is for $300 they will, and all you will receive is $50.
Medical Coverage and Expenses
- Heymondo travel insurance has coverage of up to $10,000,000 in medical expenses. This depends on your plan of course, and your home country/destination.
- They won’t cover you straight away as some companies do with an advance. However, the claims process is so much quicker than any company we have dealt with, so you aren’t sitting around waiting for months.
Baggage Damage and Theft Insurance Coverage
- The insurance company will cover between $1,700 and $2,500 for damaged or lost luggage in the event of theft, total or partial loss (caused by the carrier) and various other reasons.
- It’s best to jump on their page and check out the coverage here, but know they are the ones who will assist with the baggage issues and often don’t just leave you to call the airlines.
Cancellation Travel Insurance Coverage
- Heymondo covers up to $7,000 for ‘cancellations, delays, or interruptions.
- But make sure you read the T’s and C’s regarding cancellations! One of our claims wasn’t covered, and we thought it was! See below on COVID Travel Insurance and cancellations during COVID-19, or our story below on our experience with Heymondo.
Repatriation/Death Travel Insurance Coverage
- Heymondo will also cover repatriation for death to your home country for you and your family up to $500,000. Not a nice one to talk about but one we all need to know, especially if you plan on doing some extreme or adventure sports or heading to somewhat dangerous places.
- It’s also good to know that in the event that a family member is hospitalized or dies while travelling, Heymondo will also cover the return home.
Natural Disaster Insurance Coverage
- Additional accommodation and transportation costs of up to $1,250 incurred during the insured trip due to natural disasters. Things such as a flood, earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, avalanches, hurricanes, storms, tornados, fires or volcanic activity are caused by nature.
Adventure Sports Insurance Coverage – Add-on
- For around $ 40 USD p/m, you can add on adventure sports coverage. See our section below, especially for adventure sports coverage or check out any policy for more info.
Adventure Sports Insurance Coverage – Add-on
- For around $ 30 USD p/m, you can add on coverage for electronic equipment. Make sure to read T’s and C’s and up to what value they cover etc.

Heymondo COVID Travel Insurance
Heymondo Travel Insurance covers COVID and related expenses, thankfully! As stated on their website, “All travel insurance plans that you see on the Heymondo Travel Insurance website cover medical assistance and expenses even in the event of infection by COVID-19.”
If traveling during COVID 19 isn’t a strange enough time, knowing you are covered for COVID is somewhat comforting. COVID travel insurance isn’t something most travel insurance companies cover. But Heymondo travel insurance thankfully does and we have made covid-related claims with them successfully.
Below are some things to note on the Heymondo COVID travel insurance cover:
Handy COVID Travel Certificate
One awesome thing to note about Heymondo COVID Travel Insurance is that within the app on your phone, you can actually find a document from the insurance company stating your ‘Travel Insurance Company Covers Against COVID.’
Many countries require this for you to enter- it is handy to whip it out and show any agent at a border.
Cancellations
Travel insurance companies are typically hard to deal with for cancellations; shit does happen and you want to know you’re covered.
Heymondo will cover “trip cancellation for non-refundable expenses if, before you leave home, you have to cancel your trip after you or your travel companion test positive or if a close relative develops an unexpected emergency medical condition or dies, including COVID-19 cases.” This should give extra peace of mind.
It is important to know that if you purchase any further travel whilst on a trip you will need to purchase extra cancellation insurance. Meaning for that trip if you get COVID or you have a reactive test the trip will not be covered.
So, if you have a long-stay policy and are somewhere like Bali and book a trip to another Island, then get a reactive COVID test and can’t fly, they won’t cover it as the insurance was purchased ‘in your home country’ (not Bali).
To explain, this was actually the situation we had. We’d left home and started our trip. We were in Bali, and the next booking needed additional cancellation insurance to cover it, as it was a new trip. Read more below.
To highlight what they specifically say about their COVID travel insurance policy on their website;
COVID-19 COVERAGE INCLUDES:
- Medical expenses due to coronavirus infection, including medically prescribed PCR tests.
- Medical transportation and repatriation if the return trip is affected.
- Extra lodging expenses due to medical quarantine are covered when testing positive and prescribed by a doctor if it prevents you from returning home on the scheduled date.
- The trip cancellation guarantee includes coverage in case of serious illness or death of the insured person or a family member due to Covid-19.

Heymondo Adventure Travel Insurance
Another cool feature with Heymondo is the Adventure Travel Insurance optional add-on. It’s important to note that Heymondo Travel Insurance plans already cover heaps of activities, but they all have an optional add-on for even more adventure-related activities.
This was another one of the reasons we chose Heymondo as adventure travelers; it wasn’t too expensive either (around $20-30USD p/m for our policy).
What’s Included Already (Without the Add-On)
Honestly, their normal travel insurance policy covers many sports and activities already. For example, everyday activities like basketball and jogging, athletics and golf, beach-related sports like volleyball, and simple water sports like surfing and kayaking are already covered.
Some inclusions that surprised us in the regular policy were paddle surfing, hiking below 3,000m, jet skiing, snowmobiles, sailing, and snorkeling. Oh, and for some reason, bull-riding is also covered (not that we approve of any kind of animal cruelty!), which is great to keep in mind…
*Check out the Adventure sports drop-down menu on any policy to see exactly what you are covered for if you want more information; as I said, ours is the long-stay policy, so others may be different.
**Please note they previously covered for skiing and snowboarding but appear to no longer cover them.
What’s Included in the Adventure Sports Add on
Adventure sports Travel Insurance can often set you back a bit. Ask anyone who’s been diving or bungee jumping – it’s often difficult to find a policy that covers you.
Heymondo covers the activities below if you purchase the additional adventure sports add-on:
As reads on their webpage,
With the Adventure sports add on, the coverage will also apply to the following activities: “White-water rafting, airsofting, canyoning, diving and underwater activities less than 20 metres deep, bouldering up to a height of 8 metres, horse riding, climbing, fencing, caving at depths of less than 150 metres, water skiing, fly surfing, hydrobob, hydrospeed, kitesurfing, bicycle touring, mountain bike rides, deep-water soloing up to a height of 8 metres, quad biking, rafting, abseiling, bungee jumping, survival, trekking at altitudes of up to 5,000 metres and any activity of similar characteristics.”
For a small extra fee per month, any adventure traveler (or scuba diver) would be excited about this add-on!

Our Experience with Heymondo Travel Insurance
So here is where we get a little personal about our experience with Heymondo travel insurance and our travel insurance claims process. We have had Heymondo insurance since March of 2020 but wanted to make sure we had a bit of experience dealing with them before doing a full review.
Traveling during COVID-19 was difficult at the best of times, and finding the right COVID Travel Insurance was difficult- not many travel insurances cover COVID-19 in their insurance policies. So, having left two days before Melbourne shut its airport due to COVID, we had to make sure it was a part of our policy. As we established, thankfully, Heymondo Travel Insurance covers COVID-related issues.
Our Claims
We had to make three claims during our whole eight months in Bali/Indonesia;
2x Cases for PCR (swab) Tests to claim back required swab tests after rapid reactive tests: These were because we tried to travel domestically between islands in Indonesia, and they required a Rapid Test to leave (which is unreliable). Kimmie and I tested ‘reactive’ once, which required a follow-up PCR test, prescribed by a doctor and required by law just in case we were infected. Heymondo agreed to cover what was a high cost at the time for a PCR test. Both came back negative, though (frustrating, but relieving!)
Trip Cancellation: for one of the instances of getting a rapid reactive test, we had to cancel our entire trip to Komodo. This was not covered under trip cancellation because we had not purchased an additional trip cancellation insurance policy (and had already left our home country, as described above). For trip cancelation with Heymondo, make sure to book an extra package for it.
1x For a Medical Emergency: This required doctor visits, medication, X-rays and CAT scans. It’s honestly not even a good story. I fell in a hole whilst running and broke 2 ribs, then had to go to the doctor, followed by the hospital. Laugh all you like. Heymondo still covered me and managed to make me feel like I wasn’t a total idiot.
Claims Process and Our Experience
The claims process was relatively simple for both:
- We messaged through the app to the support desk to lodge a claim
- Got an email reply within a few days from a member of their claims team
- Documents such as medical reports and receipts were requested as evidence
- Once submitted, a few additional explanations were required, and as stated, we found out some things weren’t covered.
- Received a message from the underwriter *sigh*
- This was difficult to deal with, and after a few messages back and forth, we reached back out to Heymondo
- Heymondo Insurance told us not to worry; they would message the underwriter
- Eventually, the underwriter asked for payment details
This was around 10-20 days from when the claim was sent in, depending on how quickly we replied and sent in our documents. - A few days later, a ‘payment has been sent, you can expect it within 10-15 days’ message was received.
All in all, this whole process took between 10 to 20 days to resolve and a further 10-20 days to receive payment into our bank accounts.
Whilst up to 40 days to receive payment may seem like a long time, anyone that has dealt with insurance companies then, they will know that the process can be ongoing for months and require many unnecessary steps.

Travel Insurance Disclaimer – Please Note
Working in insurance for 2 years has taught me that insurance is difficult to understand at the best of times, comes with large documents and often leaves you wondering why you either didn’t get paid out or it cost you so much in the first place.
So, whilst we strongly advise you to use our Heymondo review as a guide, we highly recommend you read all of your policy details before purchasing anything with Heymondo travel insurnace and note we take no responsibility if details have changed since publications, prices are different from what is stated or circumstances are different from how we have explained.
This Heymondo review of our experience with some additional information to describe why we chose to use Heymondo Travel Insurance, not a recommendation or financial advice. Just why we like it and our experience.

It seems you have to be from Spain for this travel insurance to cover you. So that’s not good. Purchased it and the first thing I read when the documents come through are:
Policyholder: The legal or natural person of legal age, insured or not, fiscal resident of Spain who figures as such in the policy schedule and insurance certificate, responsible for payment of the premium and who represents all insureds covered by the policy”
Now, I cannot find anything when you Google this or on the website as HeyMondo doesn’t seem to mention it. What they are doing though is a tonne or SEO like this article to try and rank for CoVid Insurance and then slyly not informing people to be covered you have to be a Spanish resident.
I was trapped and now fighting for a refund. Completely bogus.

Hey James - Eliot here. You simply have to select the country you are from when you request a quote. If you did not do this, it would likely be set to Spain as this is where it's based. Again, reach out to us if you have any more questions; I can't send screenshots over this comment.

Hey James - approving this comment so others can see the situation. Really unsure where you found this or why it would say that, as I am a legal resident of the US and my partner is a resident of Australia - and we have both used Heymondo all year and processed multiple successful claims as we have outlined in this article. The company is based in Spain and has just branched out into the English speaking markets. I do not work for Heymondo; I am an independent blogger who has used SEO to display my review of Heymondo after using their long stay insurance policy for the last 10 months. I waited until my partner and I had processed claims with them before publishing this review as I am now an affiliate because we have had a great experience. I can tell you that their customer service is extremely responsive so I suggest reaching out to them before calling it bogus - they are super helpful. You can also reach out to me on Instagram @kimmconn if you want to hear more about our experience with Heymondo; I'm happy to chat.

Thanks for this article. I'm a little suspicious though because I cannot find any policy documents prior to purchasing the insurance... which is a bit worrying. Equally, I can't call them as a new customer to find answers to my questions - I can only email or WhatsApp. Are they definitely legitimate?

Hey Keir - I totally feel you; I couldn't find too much when they first contacted me... I think it's because they are even newer to the English-speaking market (they have been around longer in Spanish and Italian as they are Spain-based). I took a chance on them and have been super happy, happy enough to write this article clearly haha. I waited until we had processed a few claims with them to write a full review and recommend them to my audience. I can confidently day we are happy with them and I will be using them for the foreseeable future. As we said in the article we have claimed back some covid-related things (swab tests) and also some medical issues. I would just say to make sure to purchase a trip cancellation policy (on top of another policy) if you plan any "trip within a trip" type of things. As far as contacting them as a new customer I can't really answer that as I haven' had to but the response as a customer is prompt.
