There are more unique places to stay in Bali than any other destination I know about. This island is truly creative and full of unusual and amazing places to stay or get away, from bamboo houses in the rice fields to jungle bungalows to uniquely designed ocean-view villas.
This article will be full of all the wonderful and unusual places to stay in Bali that are an experience in and of themselves. Just visiting these places is worthwhile, but staying in them for a few nights is even better. These unique places to stay are in Bali and on surrounding islands as well, all with jaw-dropping locations, architecture, decor, views, or even all of the above.
I have included villas, retreats, and boutique hotels/resorts from as many different locations around Bali as possible to make a well-rounded summary. See how many you can visit during your trip! I have visited most of these myself during the 3+ years I’ve lived on the island (and even made videos at many as we were practicing our vlogging skills a few years back) but will note if otherwise.

Camaya Bali – Sideman
Its one of the Unique Places to Stay in Bali Because: Camaya is the quintessential Bali net bed location overlooking a misty ricefield view… with now up to 8 gorgeous bamboo houses/rooms and pools too!
Chances are that you have already seen Camaya Bali on instagram. It’s one of THE famous places for net bed photos, bamboo architecture, and rice field views. Camaya has 8 incredibly designed bamboo houses now, from the original one – Suboya, Butterfly, Lotus, Pyramid, Santai, Sayang, Metangi, and Nirvana, and each one is completely unique.
Camaya Bali is located in the village of Selat, which is just north of Sideman and about 2 hours from Canggu. It’s perfect for a getaway as they have a restaurant on-site as well as different activities. This is honestly my favorite of the unique places to stay in Bali as the houses are spacious and comfortable and the whole area is beautiful – you truly get a remote Bali vibe here that’s really special.

Katana Villa – Amed
Its one of the Unique Places to Stay in Bali Because: It’s a completely one-of-a-kind, colorful, three-bedroom, fully ANIMAL THEMED villa in the hills above Amed, with unique architecture, a waterslide and pool cave, and animals on the property.
Yes, you read the above correctly. This villa is comprised of three separate and completely unique bedroom units, each with their own vibe, colors, and (often handmade) decor. The entire villa follows an animal theme, with sculptures, decor, paintings, mosaics, and even door handles and water taps of different creatures.
We found Katana Villa on Airbnb before our trip to Amed, and staying here truly made our trip. The staff was absolutely lovely, and made us fresh breakfast each morning with a smile. We also met the owners, who have a villa next door and own dogs, birds, cats, and more (so be prepared for real animals, too)!
The villa is EXTREMELY spacious with a grass area, deck chairs, big pool with an underground grotto and water slide, and even a sandy beach (in the pool). I was obsessed with this villa and can’t wait to return one day!
Amed is an amazing destination on Bali’s north coast with calm waters and beautiful reefs. There are a lot more relaxed things to do in Amed than many other places in Bali, as well as diving and snorkeling in Amed.
If you want to see more coastal destinations than just in Bali, hopping from place to place, going on an Indonesia cruise is a great way to explore multiple islands in Indonesia.
Sumberkima Private Villa Retreat – West Bali
It’s one of the Unique Places to Stay in Bali Because: It’s perched on either side of a hill facing either the sunrise or sunset in West Bali, with now over 70 totally unique and modern private pool villas, rooms, and cabins, and a raised pool with an epic view (althought they have definitely built a lot more amazing stuff since I last visited).
Sumberkima Hill is one of the more remote places to stay in Bali, but it’s way worth talking a trip out to explore West Bali off the beaten track (here’s my West Bali road trip itinerary). This ‘retreat’ is doubly unique because no two villas are identical. In fact, the villas are built in wildly different styles, ranging from traditional Balinese joglos to sleek and modern boxy open villas.
On their website you can look through all the different villas, divided by number of rooms, villa type, budget/mid/luxury, and sunrise/sunset view. You can rent different sizes from 1BR to 5BR, all of which come with access to on-site restaurants, the spa, and the yoga/gym space. West Bali is perhaps the least visited part of the island because it is not easy to get to. But if you commit to a fun road trip, it can be one os the most rewarding and you can find more cool accommodations on Cozy Cozy! West Bali has a more authentic Indonesian feel to it than some of the tourist centers, and has West Bali National Park, Menjangan Island (scuba diving and snorkeling) and more.
Munduk Moding Plantation Resort
Munduk Moding Plantation is more than a unique stay in Bali – it’s a staple of sustainability, a mountain getaway, and the site of the top-ranked infinity pool(s) in the WORLD!
MMP has some of the most iconic sunsets and sunrises in Bali, and an amazing restaurant overlooking a vaste view that can stretch all the way to Java on a clear morning (before inevitable clouds roll in). But what makes Munduk Moding extra unique is their commitment to sustainability, contributing the local communities, recycling, and growing their own food.
Each day at MMP, there are at least 10 different activities to take part in, from making healthy juices from local ingredients to making candles out of used cooking oil. MMP gives local children lessons in English and collects their trash while at it, recycling plastic into many different items at the resort. They also buy from local farmers and product AMAZING coffee.
Great view? Yes. But great cause? Also yes. This is THE place to come and experience the higher altitude, cooler mountain areas of Bali.
Villa Cella Bella – Ubud
It’s one of the Unique Places to Stay in Bali Because: It’s perched on the side of a HUGE canyon in Ubud with one of the best Ubud hotel views I have seen, with net beds, a cliffside bath, a huge brass flower, and other truly Instagrammable things throughout.
Villa Cella Bella is a super-boutique hotel/villa with 4 rooms in the main house and a private pool villa down below. The main house all has access to the main pool, lotus flower platform, brass bath, heart bench, and 2 large net beds overlooking the canyon. The ‘Luxe Suite’ has its own net bed and private balcony, and the Private River Villa has its own pool, bath, and net.
Cella Bella is truly one of the most instagram-friendly and amazing places to stay in Bali. Unlike many of the open bamboo houses, this accommodation has fully enclosed rooms with air conditioning so you can get away from the bugs if need be. They also have a kitchen, butler service, and room service so you can unplug.
Sky High Bamboo TreeHouses in Sidemen – Laputa Villas
It’s one of the Unique Places to Stay in Bali Because: If you dream of waking up with views over rice terraces, mountains, and the ocean from up high, you’ve got it all here. Not to mention, the architecture is out of this world – legit, the whole villa looks like it could take flight with its curved roof. Well – villas, because there are 3 now that you can stay in!
About an hour from Ubud in the heart of Sideman, Laputa Villa is perfect for those who want a remote getaway. And yes, I mean remote. There’s no ATMs, restaurants, or shops in walking distance. This is a true mountaintop getaway, with its own road going up a vertical mountain and nothing else around (but the best view you can imagine).
Keep in mind though, because it’s in the jungle, you might make friends with frogs and insects here and there. Despite this, there are still lots of modern features, including Wifi, a hair dryer, a water kettle, and more.
Overall, the property is perfect for groups of up to 4 guests, and there are two bedrooms, a patio, and a functional kitchen. To top off the experience, there’s a hanging net where you can kick back and enjoy mother nature’s skyline shows.
Pondok Manoka Chalet by the Lake – Kintamani
It’s one of the Unique Places to Stay in Bali Because: It’s an actual mountain chalet design in the middle of Kintamani with a fire pit and view of Mt Batur and lake.
Would you ever have guessed that you could stay in an alpine chalet… in Bali?! Pondok Manoka, this Kintamani ‘chalet by the lake’ is truly designed like it was next to the ski slopes, but with a bit of open Bali influence. The chalet can fit up to 8 people in 4 beds, and is a super fun idea for a mountain getaway ith friends in the summer (we went for my birthday).
It has a full kitchen and some games, or you can order an Indonesian feast from the host. You can also book a Batur hike or some other mountain activities while staying here.
Kintamani has a higher elevation and therefore colder temperatures than the rest of Bali. Staying here really has a mountain feel. You will need actual pants, socks, and jackets (things that are rare in coastal Bali, haha) and will likely want to light the bonfire and watch the sunset over the surrounding mountains. Just make sure to bring marshmallows with you because you can’t buy them anywhere in Kintamani!
Ulaman Boutique Eco Retreat – Tabanan
It’s one of the Unique Places to Stay in Bali Because: It has incredible, unique, and inspiring sweeping bamboo architecture in the rooms, amazing ‘floating avatar’ rooms, ayoga shala, a spa, and more, and is set in the jungle on a river in rice fields.
Ulaman Eco Retreat is iconic in the Bali boutique/eco accommodation realm, but it has risen to popularity very quickly. It opened up in 2020 with 8 bungalows and 3 deluxe cocoon rooms, and opened up their extremely instagrammable ‘phase 2’ a few years later with their ‘Avatar treehouse’ rooms and ‘floating lake’ rooms. Just check the link below for pictures of these newer tooms since I last visited.
Most assume that Ulaman is in Ubud, but it’s actually located in a more remote part of Badung called Tabanan, not far from Seseh. It’s about equi-distant from both Canggu and Ubud (30 minutes or so). It’s a fabulous getaway, with a high-end delicious restaurant on-site, a yoga shala with classes, beautiful pools, and a spa center above the flowing river.

La Santa Rosa Resort (prev. The Alchemist Bali Bungalows) – Balangan Beach Uluwatu
It’s one of the Unique Places to Stay in Bali Because: It has very unique European-influenced architecture with a truly Bali twist, with seven completely unique bungalows and 6+ new massive luxurious rooms set within a jungle with the most beautiful pools and setting.
No but seriously, I think this is my favorite property in Bali… and that is saying something. La Santa Rosa looks like you wrapped France and Greece up and plopped them into Bali. The entryway is a cute outdoor french-style dining area under the trees. When you move back toward the bungalows, you must move past hanging vines and plants to emerge into what i think is the most gorgeous pool area in Bali.
Or, should I say pool areaS now because after a huge renovation, they opened up a whole second area around 2025 that a dare say might be even more gorgeous than the first.
Mosaics and white stone adorn long pools, with an absolutely beautiful areas to relax in the shade. You’ll be able to say hi to the dogs are few cats on the property too. The bungalows are a lot more rustic, but the new rooms feel like you turned into an ancient greed god, and this is where you live. Each bungalow or room is completely different, but my number one favorite bungalow is called Romeo and Juliet, followed by Le Petit Prince (if you don’t mind a treehouse style room).
I just LOVE the Alchemist Bali. This place will always have a special place in my heart because we discovered it on a random road trip, came back 3 months later, and stayed in 3 different bungalows for a total of one month. Firefly Eco Unique Bali Lodge – Ubud
It’s one of the Unique Places to Stay in Bali Because: It has unique and open treehouse rooms, including a 4-story treehouse with 3 rentable rooms, on rice fields in Ubud.
Firefly Bali is a dreamy property just outside Ubud city center. It started with one beautiful open bamboo house and has since grown to 11 rooms/beds, all in totally different settings. Firefly is the best known for its 4-story ‘birdsnest’ treehouse (popular on instagram) where you can rent a bed on any of 3 levels and must climb a ladder to get to it.
There’s another multi-level treehouse, an outdoor bath, and 4 indoor ‘retreat’ rooms that actually close in (some with air con) for those who aren’t particularly fond of outdoor living. There’s a lovely common space with a pool and restaurant too – all very affordable.
You can get to Ubud city center within 5 minutes on a scooter – I highly recommend accessing Firefly from the north (closer to Ubud center) than the south, though, as the road coming from the south is treacherous and thin even for experienced drivers! Each room is different so read up on their website for more clarity.
Rumah Pohon Treehouse – Nusa Penida
It’s one of the Unique Places to Stay in Bali Because: It’s a set of 3 remote treehouses perched on an actual cliff overlooking famous Diamond Beach in Nusa Penida.
Rumah Pohon, or ‘the Nusa Penida Treehouse’ is actually a set of 3 (very basic) treehouses perched on a cliff in south Nusa Penida Island. One of them is quite famous because of the incredible staircase view of Diamond Beach directly behind it. These treehouses are quite coveted as a bucket list place to stay on Nusa Penida, so they often book up early.
They’re not for people who want luxury, however… these rooms are VERY basic with a shared toilet, a few power outlets, a fan, and a table. That’s it. It’s worth spending a night for the experience, though – I’ll never forgt the feeling of the tree swaying in the wind and the sound of the distant waves crashing below.

Gravity Hotel – Uluwatu
It’s one of the Unique Places to Stay in Bali Because: It’s an all-white (and beige) hotel in central Padang Padang with many different sizes of sleek rooms and villas
I’m a big fan of a boutique hotel (clearly), and Gravity is one of the most popular in Uluwatu. Like many of these unique places to stay in Bali, Gravity offers different kinds and sizes of rooms, from little bungalows to luxury suites.
White stone borders turquoise pools around the whole property, with ocean views all around from up the hill in Padang Padang. The rooms are monochrome and modern making for a unique and beautiful stay in Uluwatu. Make sure to check out the best bars in Uluwatu and also my complete Uluwatu food guide if you head there.
Zen Hideaway – Ubud
It’s one of the Unique Places to Stay in Bali Because: Home of ‘THE Bali Swing,’ Zen Hideaway has 3 different bamboo properties in Ubud with amazing views.
Zen Hideaway is a popular choice to stay in Ubud. It apparently has the first Bali Swing (which is now a trend that has spread far), and also a net bed view in one of their houses (number 3), too. It’s an amazing jungle getaway with greenery all around.
They are located high up on a hill overlooking a river and canyon – the views are simply unbeatable.
Desa Eko – Munduk
It’s one of the Unique Places to Stay in Bali Because: It’s a small bell tent glamping village sprawling down a hillside in mountainous Munduk, within walking distance to multiple waterfalls.
Desa Eko is not one of the most luxurious places to stay in Bali but it surely is unique. It consists of a community of bell tents – some private and some with hostel-style dorm rooms – in the heart of higher-altitude Munduk area in central Bali. Known for beautiful lakes, waterfalls, and hikes (and a lower temperature than the rest of Bali), Munduk is a lesser-known yet well-worthwhile getaway in Bali.
Desa Eko truly is a village, with some members living on site at all times. They have a beautiful yoga space, a delicious restaurant (open to the public), and a full immersion into nature. If you are a more spiritual festival-lover, Dea Eco sometimes holds weekend-long events that include yoga, meditation, waterfall walks, and live music/ecstatic dance.
The Korowai – Bingin, Uluwatu
It’s one of the Unique Places to Stay in Bali Because: It’s a wooden jungle paradise tucked into a cliff at the end of Bingin Beach with only a few rooms.
The Korowai is one of my favorite finds in Uluwatu. From out in the surf at Bingin, you can just make out a really cool-looking wooden group of cabins sprawling down the cliff within the trees. You must walk quite a ways down a path to access The Korowai, but I must say it’s exactly what you’d imagine in a remote and absolutely AMAZING beach getaway.
They have a few rooms with small plunge pools and hanging nets, and the whole thing gives off a bit of a Tulum vibe. Sunsets from here are pretty much perfect, and you can watch ‘the impossibles’ break from the cozy restaurant with a fresh coconut. I can’t wait to actually stay here (I just visited for a drink last time) next time I go to Uluwatu!
Bambu Indah – Ubud
It’s one of the Unique Places to Stay in Bali Because: It’s a sustainable designer jungle retreat in Ubud with about 20 completely unique houses with different architecture.
Bambu Indah is at the top of my Bali accommodation wishlist. They have about 20 houses that are all completely different than each other, made from bamboo and teak with Javanese touches. Some are more traditional style, and others are really unusual and modern.
For the most unique and unusual rooms at Bambu Indah, I would recommend checking out the Moon, Copper, Pagoda, or Riverbend Houses. You can view the different ones on their website.
Stone House Bali – Ubud
It’s one of the Unique Places to Stay in Bali Because: Stone House has 6 different rooms/houses that are all completely unique. One is bamboo, a few are wooden, and others are blue and white in a Greek theme.
Stone House Bali is a creative property outside of Ubud. Their most famous room is their ‘treehouse’, which has an entirely bamboo interior, a brass bath, a cocoon shape, and a net bed.
However, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that they have a few completely different room styles. My favorites are the ‘Sky View’ rooms, which are styled in blue and white like you would find in Mykonos or Santorini. Most have plentiful outdoor areas and views.
Magic Hills Unique Bamboo Eco Lodge – Selat
It’s one of the Unique Places to Stay in Bali Because: You’re totally immersed in nature – this is another of the iconic (but a bit newer) Sidemen/Selat area bamboo house getaways that give totally Bali, nature-sounds-and paddy-views vibe… with a touch of luxury because obviously. They have TEN houses now – check the Agoda link to see how unique they are.
Magic Hills Eco Lodges include the Queen House, the Princess House, the Angel House, and more. They all have a variety of luxurious and relaxing amenities such as spa tubs, pools, and hammocks which compliment unique Bali-style bamboo architecture. Oh yeah, and breakfast is included.
Arna Bali
It’s one of the Unique Places to Stay in Bali Because: It’s a very cool glamping property bordering the famous Blue Lagoon in Nusa Ceningan, with a few dozen super huge and luxurious glamping tents where you can sleep with the sounds of the waves… and it has a super trendy beach club with amazing food and what should be considered the definition of an infinity pool.
I stayed at Arna for a few nights while exploreing Nusa Ceningan and Lembongan (check my guide to the islands here) and I loved it! It’s an awesome getaway to be truly surrounded by nature and the iconic crashing waves of Nusa Ceningan.
There are tons of breathtaking viewpoints within a short drive, so it;s great for adventure – or to just chill at the beach club (it’s called and ‘ocean lounge’ … extra boujie) all day and try their dishes from small plates to cheese boards to fancy steaks with a view.
