If you’ve been on instagram, chances are that you already know what Camaya Bali is. This incredible property of 4 bamboo houses might be one of the most scenic and serene on the island. If you follow any travel influencers who have been to Bali, which (let’s be honest) is most of them, you have surely drooled over photos of pools looking out over rice fields and hanging net beds in the jungle.
Located in the beautiful hills of Selat (just north of Sideman – not in Ubud like many believe), Camaya was all we needed from a getaway. We were lucky enough to visit Camaya Bali during some down time in 2020. We were the only people on the property at the time, so we were able to explore the different houses and really get a feel for the property and what makes each house unique.

There are a total of 5 rentable houses on the property, which are true Bali hidden gems. Four of them are unique bamboo houses with net beds, pools, and at least two beds/bedrooms (Suboya, Pyramid, Lotus, and Butterfly House).
The last house is a smaller Balinese-style construction with one room. If you are like me and know you want to visit Camaya Bali but aren’t sure which house to book or what you want in general, keep reading my Camaya Bali review and guide to visiting. Also – thanks to @robiawan1996 for the amazing couple’s photoshoot!

Camaya Bali Suboya House
Suboya is the first bamboo house of Camaya Bali, finished in 2017. This is THE Bali net bed house, with a hanging net with a view of jungle, rice terraces, and a distant Mt Agung Peak. This is the most remote of the Camaya Bali Bamboo houses, with its own small area nearer to the restaurant than the other houses.
What makes Suboya house Special: It’s the only house at Camaya Bali with a kitchen; it has the most famous ’net bed’ view, and is the only one constructed more like a traditional two-story house. It is the original Camaya house and has a heatable natural pool, beautiful macrame hammock, and bright fairy lights out front.

Suboya House Info:
Beds/Bedrooms
Suboya has two bedrooms. The downstairs bed is fully open to the elements (with a mosquito net), and the upstairs one can be closed in with glass/bamboo doors.
Bathrooms
There’s one full bathroom with a beautiful jungle shower downstairs, and a toilet upstairs (1.5).

Kitchen
This is the only house with a kitchen. It’s complete with a stove, fridge, kettle, water, pots/pans/cutlery, and more.
Ned bed
The net bed is on the second floor overlooking the jungle
Pool
Suboya has a natural spring pool with option to heat
Extras
Fire Pit, Fans
Camaya Butterfly House

The Camaya Butterfly House is one of the more recent additions to Camaya Bali. With two beautifully designed bedrooms and a half-moon pool overlooking the rice paddies, it’s a really great option out of the Camaya Bali houses.
Why makes Butterfly House Special: Chances are you have seen Butterfly House’s AMAZING upstairs movie area on instagram, with a projector, fairy lights, a net bed, pillows, and bean bags. It’s one of the coolest movie setups I’ve ever seen. The main net bed (of which there are 2, which is also unique) here is also huge and surrounds the pool, and the architecture is really beautiful (like a butterfly, ha).

Camaya Butterfly House Info
Beds/Bedrooms
Butterfly House has 2 identical bedrooms on either side of the bathroom (it’s very symmetrical). They have a big comfy bed, a curtain at the front that opens to the outside, bookshelves, and a raised little reading area in the corner.
Bathrooms
There are two separate toilet rooms and one shared bathroom and lovely jungle shower
Kitchen
Kettle+ water only
Ned bed
Butterfly House has a really unique ground floor net bed surrounding the small pool, and a second floor movie room net bed too. Both are made with stretchy material.
Pool
Butterfly House has a small cold water half-moon pool overlooking rice terraces
Extras
Fire Pit, Fans in rooms
Camaya Bali Pyramid House

Pyramid House is aptly named because it is shaped like – you guessed it – a pyramid. This Camaya Bali Bamboo House has multiple levels and unique spaces.
What Makes Pyramid House Special: The architecture of Pyramid House is VERY unique, with multiple levels of ned beds and lounge areas right in front of the main bedroom. It’s got a net bed out front and also a raised net bed above the whole lounge area to create many levels of beautiful views.
Camaya Pyramid House Info
Beds/Bedrooms
Pyramid House has one main house with a big high (pyramid) ceiling, and another smaller little pod-like bedroom next door with a circular bed. Both are very open to the outside but have curtains and mosquito nets that can be closed.
Bathrooms
Both the smaller pod room and the main pyramid room have their own toilet and shower.
Kitchen
Kettle+ water only
Ned bed
Pyramid house has one loft-like net bed that you have to climb a ladder to, and one at the front by the rice fields. Both are stretchy.
Pool
There is a small cold water pool in the corner near the pod room
Extras
Fire Pit, Fans in rooms
Camaya Bali Lotus House

Lotus House is a newer construction at Camaya Bali with yet another incredibly creative and aesthetically pleasing design. Located between Butterfly House and Pyramid House, Lotus house has similarly amazing jungle/rice field views but not AS much privacy.
What Makes Lotus House Special: Lotus house is constructed literally like a Lotus, which is VERY beautiful (especially from a drone). lotus is the only house with a small pond/fountain and a sunken pool lower than the house and net bed, making is even better for photos in front of the rice fields.
Camaya Lotus House Info
Beds/Bedrooms
Lotus House has one main “Lotus” house with a big high ceiling and circular bed, and another smaller pod-like bedroom next door with a circular bed too. Lotus House has huge leaf-shaped doors that can be closed, and the pod room has curtains.
Bathrooms
The Lotus room has an ensuite bathroom and shower in the back that opens to the jungle/garden. The Pod room has its own outdoor facilities next to it.
Kitchen
Kettle+ water only
Ned bed
Lotus House has one large stretchy net bed right in front of the larger house, overlooking the pool.
Pool
Lotus House has a small pool below the net bed with a fantastic view and placement
Extras
Fire Pit, Fans, fish pond

Camaya Bali Nirvana House
I only visited Nirvana for a moment, so this description may not be QUITE as detailed! 😛 This is the one Camaya house that isn’t a bamboo architecture marvel; it’s actually a traditional Balinese-style house.
What Makes Nirvana House Special: It’s the only fully-enclosed and one one-bedroom home at Camaya Bali. Nirvana is the smallest of the Camaya houses, built from concrete and wood, and has an enclosed room and bathroom. There’s a hammock on the porch but it doesn’t have as much space as the others (but is more affordable)!

Tips for Visiting Camaya Bali
Here are some final tips of things I wish I knew before visiting Camaya!
Wifi
The wifi here is VERY questionable (or, at least it was when I went as it was empty). The wifi for our house (suboya) was a small data router that honestly didn’t REALLY work. We were much better able to hotspot wifi from our phone with an Indonesian SIOM, so I recommend doing that if you can.
Food at Camaya Bali
There’s a restaurant on-site here with lovely hospitality and prompt service. It’s much easier to order food from the hotel restaurant than it is so explore the remote area for small warungs or other places to eat, as the food here is surprisingly affordable.
They have mostly Indonesian food with a few twists on Western classics. For us, the food was pretty decent and we were happy with it, but it wasn’t the best Indonesian meal we’d had by far. If you stay in Suboya House, perhaps stop by some local markets and grab some produce to cook with for a few meals.
I have photos of EVERYTHING but I need to get them off my hard drive… for some reason only the drone and photoshoot pics made it, haha.

Hospitality at Camaya Bali
The hospitality here is simply incredible. We were fully taken care of by the manager at the time, Agusto, and he always made sure we had our food orders in for breakfast and dinner and that we had everything we need. He helped us heat the natural pool and lit the bonfire for us on both nights. Everyone was lovely and we were thankful for our visit.
Bugs in Bali Bamboo Houses
Yes, you guessed it… bamboo houses can get VERY buggy. When you are living outside and open to the elements in a jungle, you will experience a range of other living things and tiny visitors. It’s all part of the experience, but it’s also understandable to get squeamish here and there. Here are some tips for dealing with bugs:
- You can expect beetles of all sizes, flying things, moths, butterflies, mosquitos and gnats (but each villa provides both repellent and heavy duty bug spray)
- Shake things out before wrapping them on you, just in case anything has nestles itself inside. Towels, robes, sheets, etc!
- Make sure to close the mosquito net or bed curtain whether you are inside or not – it keeps things out all day.
- Leave a light on outside until you go to bed or bugs will try to get to your phone light or computer light inside the curtain, e.g. buzzing into the curtain and scaring the heck out of you 😛
- Also – try to be one with the bugs. They are a part of being out in nature. Be nice to them and accept them if you can!
Temperature in Selat
Camaya is located in Selat, just north of Sideman in East Bali. The altitude of the property is a bit higher than most tourist centers in Bali, so you can expect cooler temperatures. In the wet season it’s definitely a few degrees colder than the rest of Bali (enough to light a bonfire at night), and in the dry season (June-Sept-ish) it will be even colder.
Booking Camaya Bali
You can book via the Camaya website which links you to their Airbnb listing that has all 5 houses. You can select the house you want and book it that way. They have some listings on booking.com and on Agoda but I don’t think they are usually active.
That’s all I have for this Camaya Bali Review! Did you find the information you needed? Is there anything else you’d like to know? Let me know in the comments!
